Burgatia

Standing Stone/Rock art

This is one of two decorated standing stones in Burgatia townland and the easiest to visit. It stands proudly in a field on the southwest side of the N71 overlooking Rosscarbery. I had visited this stone several times in the past but I was never happy with the images I had taken. We parked at the open entrance to the field and walked about 80 metres to the stone. The southeast face, pictured below, was lit up in beautiful sunshine as we approached the 1.98 metre high megalith.

This huge megalith is almost 1.5 metres wide and the top of the stone slopes down from the northeast to the southwest. But the main feature of this stone is the rock art on the northwest face. The megalith is decorated with 24 cup marks including one cup and ring. I have marked some of the visible cup marks on the image right. The megalith can be seen from the N71. The landowner is very accommodating and this decorated standing stone is well worth a visit.

Situated: From Rosscarbery head east over the causeway on the N71. As you go up the hill you will see the stone on your right over the hedge.
