Castletown/Kilkieran Graveyard

Standing stone

Kilkieran is known for it's superb high crosses. There are four crosses present at the site, two of these are similar in style to the magnificent high crosses at Ahenny in Tipperary. Standing in the south eastern section of the graveyard is a small conglomerate sandstone monolith. It is only 0.77 metres high and less than half a metre wide at the base. The top of the standing stone has been worked to form a round profile at the top.

The stone is extremely phallic in appearance, this is quite common for many standing stones in Ireland. Anthony Weir has an excellent article on his web site in relation to phallic standing stones.

Situated: The small standing stone can be found in Kilkieran graveyard, to the east of the stone crosses.
