Glencolumbkille

Station 15

The fifteenth and final station of an turas stands in the east end of St Columba's church grounds. Sadly the top of the decorated cross pillar has been broken off and now lies next to the main part of the slab. The schist slab would have been 1.8 metres tall when intact and the decoration was slightly more intricate than the other slabs. Originally there were three parts or elements in the decoration and these were connected by a gutter/stem running up the centre of the stone. At the bottom is a circular motif and middle element is two opposing knots. The top element, which is on the part of the slab that has broken of is an intricate circular design with arcs.

There are many more cross slabs situated in the valley associated with St Fanad and St Conall. If you do get a chance also visit the Portal tombs at Malin More.
