Tobar Bride -St Brigid's Well

Kilrossanty

Holy Wells

I thoroughly enjoyed the drive out to Kilrossanty. There was a slight evening mist as I approached the entrance to the Graveyard and Holy Wells. I climbed over the old stone stile and made my way down a gorgeous sunken trackway. As I turned right I could see the ruins of old Kilrossanty Parish Church. I passed by the church following the sign for the holy Wells. To my surprise there were three holy wells lying in an open field to the south of the church. The first well is dedicated to St Brigid and the second well is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The third well situated to the west of the field is the first well I have come across dedicated to Jesus.

They may not be the prettiest of wells but are certainly worth a visit.

The old Parish Church is situated in a small oval enclosure that also contains the graveyard. Very little remains of the nave and chancel church, most of the walls being reduced to the foundations and what remains of the pointed chancel arch is covered with vegetation. There is a window light in the south wall of the nave. In the north chancel wall is a tomb recess. The site is worth visiting for the ambiance rather than the building itself. The three wells, the graveyard and church, plus the wonderful sunken trackway all add up to a peaceful hour well spent.

Situated:From Dungarvan take the N25 North. At Lemybrien take the left for R676. Then 2nd left towards Kilrossanty. At the T-Junction turn right. The well is up here on your right.
