Medieval Tower House

The earliest tower house at Mountgarret was built by Patrick Barret, the Bishop of Ferns, in 1408. This castle was substantially re-built by Sir Richard Butler, the second son of Piers Butler, 8th Earl of Ormond, in the mid-16th century. Sir Richard became the first Lord of Mountgarret in 1550. Sadly the 5 storey tower house was poorly maintained and during the winter of 2009/10 the south wall and part of the west wall collapsed. Some conservation work has been carried out on the remaining structure, but during the time of my visit there was no public access.

Situated: Mountgarret Castle is located about 2 kilometres north of New Ross on the west side of the N30 ring road.
