Norman Motte

This large Norman motte is situated on a small ridge. It stands between 4.5 and 5 metres high, at the top it is 32 metres in diameter and at the base the diameter is 62 metres. It is believed the bailey may have been to the south and southwest but there is no visible evidence of it or a fosse. A farm track runs along the base of the motte on the nothern side. In a graveyard further down this small cul-de-sac are the foundations of a nave and chancel medieval church.

Situated: From Ashbourne head north on the N2 for about 9 kilometres then turn left for Rathfeigh. Take the next left. Then left at the T-Junction. The motte is at the corner of the next right, sign-posted Cul-de-sac.
