Reenconnell / Rinn Chonaill

High Cross

It was an absolute delight to finally visit the high cross at Reenconnell, it has been on my to do list for far to long. I had failed to visit on previous trips to the peninsula for one reason or another. This time I had no excuse as I was staying just 10 minutes away. The 1.72 metre high cross stands in a Calluragh/Burial ground that is situated in the eastern section of an early ecclesiastical enclosure. The cross bears a large inscribed latin cross, with T-bar terminals, on the south face. In the centre of the head are two inscribed concentric circles overlapping the latin cross. The north face, pictured below left, is plain.

Situated: From Dingle town head west to the Milltown roundabout. Then take the R 549 north for about 5 kilometres. Take an almost hidden left turn, just after a road on your right. Go about 250 metres, there is a track next to the first of three houses on your right. Go through the farm gate and walk up to the next field, you can see the cross in a field to your left.
