St Carthage's Well AKA Forge Well

The old monastic site in Lismore was established in the field, on the left hand side of the avenue approaching Lismore Castle. This was the site of Relig Mhuire-St Mary's Graveyard and Tobar Mhuire-St Mary's Holy Well. About 100 years ago the water from Tobar Mhuire was diverted to an outlet about 150 metres north of St Carthages well on the west side of the N72. See image below. On the east side of the road a stepped passageway leads down to a circular well, formerly known as Forge Well. The well was full of autumn leaves during my visit.

The plaque on the wall at the south side of the entrance to the well. I lost a few pics of the well and the lovely public water spout, 150 metres north of here. Because of it's location, under the trees, it is probably better to visit the well during the summer months.

Situated: On the east side of the N72 about 200 metres south of Lismore Castle.
