The church from the southeast

St Patrick's Church

Church, Cross and Font

There has been a church on this site since the 11th century. The present church early 18th century church is a rebuild of a 17th century church, destroyed in 1615. Standing in the porch is a Baptismal font, see bottom image, with an inscription dated 1723. In the same location is a stone cross with an imperforate ring. The cross was discovered in the graveyard in 1996. Various dates have been given for the cross ranging from the 13th century up until the late 17th century. I failed to locate a medieval carving of a mermaid said to be present in the church. Electrical work was ongoing at the time of my visit.

Situated: St Patrick's Church is located on Patrick's Street, in the heart of the city, next to the Garda Station.
