The Church of Grennan Thomple-Thaeghawin The Church of Grennan is situated on a hill overlooking Grennan Castle. Known as Thomple-Thaeghawin, after the rather obscure St Techán or Teghán, the church belonged to the Priory of Inistioge until the dissolution of the monasteries in 1540. The church stands inside a much overgrown graveyard. Two of the walls are lower than the vegetation, but a small piece of the north wall and the entire east wall can be viewed. The three light cusped window in the east gable, with its pointed gothic arch, offers an evocative view into the past. |
Situated: From Thomastown head south on the R448, 200 metres after crossing the river, turn left onto the Mall. After 200 metres turn left onto Castle Ave. The church is accessed via a farm gate on your left. Discovery Map 67: S 5886 4155. Last visit July 2017.
