Wileys Fort

While driving back from our visit to the Ballynarry and Castletown standing stones, we noticed Wiley's Fort marked on the OS Map. Following the map we left the main road and came to a dead end at a livery stable. The stables owner Peter, was most gracious in taking us to the rath on his land. The rath is huge, much bigger than we had anticipated. The fosse is very wide and also very deep. one of the widest and deepest I have seen. I have searched the internet since returning home, but the only information I can find is the fort was on the farm of a Mr William A. Wylie and that there may be a souterrain present.

Looking along the fosse.

Situated: From Newtownabbey take the A8 north for 6 kilometres then turn right onto Rushvale Rd. The rath is on land owned by the livery yard. Please ask for permission.
