Aghawee

Portal Tomb

The portal tomb at Aghawee is one of twelve recorded portal tombs in County Cavan. There are six more monuments of this type located within a seven kilometre radius of Aghawee. These include the portal tombs at Banagher, Duffcastle, Drumhawnagh and Middletown. Similar to the majority of the Cavan monuments the chamber faces east. It is a compact chamber only two metres in length. The matching portal stones are less than a metre apart and stand 1.75 metres tall. Both of the single side stones are 1.2 metres in height and are leaning in slightly. The backstone is just over half a metre in height and is also leaning inward. The large broken roofstone has slipped off the two portal stones.

The large stone pictured above right, is the south sidestone, in the centre is the backstone, with the broken roofstone resting on each of them. This charming megalithic tomb is situated on gently sloping farmland.

Situated: On Farmland. From Kilnaleck take the R154 north. Then turn right onto the L2518. After 500 metres take the first left, the monument is in a field on your right approx 500 metres down this road.
